How to choose an electric chain hoist

A practical buying checklist covering load capacity, lifting height, power supply, headroom and trolley requirements before requesting a quotation.

For buyers in Mumbai and nearby areas, the starting point is the lifting task—not just the tonnage on the label.

1. Start with the load

Confirm the heaviest load to be lifted, including the lifting attachments carried by the hoist. The selected rated capacity must cover the total suspended load. Do not choose by price or appearance alone; have the application assessed where the load or lifting arrangement is uncertain.

2. Measure the lifting height and available headroom

State the vertical distance the load needs to travel. Also check the space between the suspension point and the load at its highest required position. Lifting height and headroom are different measurements: a longer chain does not solve a headroom restriction. Confirm the required chain length and installed dimensions before ordering.

3. Confirm the electrical supply

Provide the site voltage, phase and frequency. An electric chain hoist must match the actual supply; do not assume that all electric hoists connect to a standard single-phase socket. Check the selected model’s nameplate and electrical requirements before purchase and installation.

4. Explain how often it will run

Describe the typical load, lifts per hour, average lifting distance and working hours per day. Capacity alone does not establish suitability for repeated use. Ask for the selected model’s duty rating, permitted starts and operating limits; do not assume continuous operation.

5. Choose the suspension and travel arrangement

Will the hoist lift from a fixed point, or must it travel along a beam? If travel is needed, provide the beam dimensions and whether manual or powered travel is required. The trolley, beam and support structure must be suitable for the complete load and installation.

6. Share the site conditions

Mention indoor or outdoor use, moisture, dust, unusual temperatures and any hazardous atmosphere. These can affect the required protection and equipment suitability. Also state any specific control or documentation requirements before the order is confirmed.

Before using the equipment

This guide is a purchasing checklist, not an installation or operating instruction. Follow the selected equipment’s instructions and have the supporting structure and installation assessed by a competent person. Hoists are for material lifting, not lifting people.
